Truman Gate Visitor Center - Welcome to Kirtland Air Force Base. Kirtland AFB's missions include research and development; testing and evaluation; search and rescue; and supporting the Air Force nuclear industry.
Kirtland AFB employs approximately 20,000 military and civilian personnel. Exhibit At George W. Bush Center In Dallas Explores Texas Presidential Escapes
Kirtland AFB is located in the high desert of north-central New Mexico in Bernalillo County. The base is located southeast of Albuquerque. North of the Rio Rancho foothills. Santa Fe is located in the northeast.

Goodfellow Afb, Fort Bliss To Hold Migrant Children
Services are held at the Welcome Center at 1451 Fourth St. H.E. The Welcome Center has representatives from Finance, Health, Housing, Bus and Personal, Air Force and TMO offices to facilitate internal services.
Units will provide their crew with progress information and checklists upon arrival. Your sponsor can also help you with the process and help you learn more about your new community.

Kirtland AFB does not have an on-base library. The nearest library is about 20 minutes away in downtown Albuquerque.

While many military family members call the base home, others choose to live in nearby communities. Albuquerque, Carnuel, Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Rio Rancho, Tijeras and other neighboring communities provide housing, jobs and other services to Kirtland AFB military families. The cost of living in the Kirtland AFB region is slightly lower than the national average, so housing and land are affordable.
Kirtland AFB is located southwest of Albuquerque. The city has about 560,500 people. Albuquerque and its communities offer residents many opportunities for recreation, outdoor activities, culture and big city events. Albuquerque is home to the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, an old and historic city, one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America, and balloon launches and festivals. Albuquerque's BioPark includes a zoo, aquarium, botanical garden and fishing ponds at Tingley Beach. The city also operates more than 288 parks, including dog parks, trails, playgrounds, playgrounds and other amenities.

There are many options for your child's school near Kirtland AFB. New Mexico offers regular public schools as well as special public and private schools. There are many day care centers and childcare programs available for younger children.
The Kirtland AFB School Liaison Office website has more information on area school districts, registration information, parent resources and more. The site also has contact information for the school's communications office, which can provide information and guides to area schools and educational resources for your children.
Kirtland AFB has a mild, dry desert climate. In summer, daytime temperatures reach 80 degrees Celsius and low 90 degrees Celsius, while low humidity and cool nights provide respite. In the winter, average highs are in the 40s and 50s and average lows in the 20s. Kirtland AFB receives only 9 inches of rain and about 10 inches of snow each year.

Kirtland AFB and the surrounding region are home to many historic sites, museums, art galleries, theaters, great restaurants and breweries, and vibrant shopping districts. Recreational opportunities abound on the grounds, including arts and crafts, bowling, camping, golf, swimming and more. Outside the gates, with Albuquerque and Santa Fe nearby, there's not much to do. Get out there and explore!
