Glock Switch Full Auto - SHREVEPORT, La. () - Representatives from the New Orleans Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were in Shreveport on Tuesday to demonstrate a simple device that turns traditional semi-automatic Glock pistols into fully automatic weapons.
Shreveport police officials say they are increasingly seeing the device being used in shootings around the city. The ATF says the Glock switch is an illegal device classified as a machine gun under federal law.

Officials say what makes the Glock so dangerous is its variable rate of fire and its inaccuracy. Even trained ATF agents struggle to loosen a Glock bolt when pressed by a switch. Illegal Device Makes Semiautomatic Pistols Fully Automatic
Glock transmissions are smaller than a quarter, cheaper and more reliable. So much so that the Birmingham police did not understand what they were seeing when the first guns that appeared in the city were changing.
"We knew when we first saw them that the gun looked different than the way it was made, so we started making inquiries with the ATF," explained BPD Chief Scott Thurmond. "I was shocked because this is a big threat to our society."
The device mounts on the back of the Glock and allows the user to switch between semi-automatic and full-automatic modes. When engaged, the switch engages the trigger mechanism to operate as a machine gun.
"Every time he pulls the trigger, he fires more shots," added ATF Special Agent Ashley Lightner, who oversees the agency's cases in Alabama. "He can fire eleven to two hundred rounds in one minute. Too dangerous for innocent bystanders. It's not a real weapon."

Lightner, ATF agents and local officers demonstrated their firepower at the local gun range. Using a Glock 17, the experts fired fifteen rounds from a semi-automatic handgun and repeated it with a Glock switch.
It took a little over one second to pull those rounds with the Glock switch compared to six seconds with the semi-auto.
"There's a lack of control, just bullets pouring out everywhere," Thurmond said. "It's not a targeted fire and that's why there are so many innocent people who can get hurt just by using these."
"When they're inaccurate, the concern is that if someone tries to shoot someone else, there's a good chance there's an innocent bystander around, and there's a good chance they're going to get shot," Lightner said. "And we've seen a lot of that in our community and across this country."

BPD started finding Glock guns in Birmingham about a year ago. The ATF confirms that incidents have increased in the Southeast in the last three months.
"We hear it regularly on ShotSpotter, so we know it's in our city," Thurmond added.
ShotSpotter is a police tool that shows maps of shootings across the city. BPD released a recent video of a ShotSpotter report of what they believe was a Glock switch being used. We clearly heard 26 shots fired per second.
Earlier this year, BPD recovered a Glock convertible pistol in an officer-involved shooting. Although they were not directly involved in this fire, it is changing the way the police do their jobs.

"Anything that can be concealed in a handgun that can be concealed in a pocket, belt or anywhere else with the ability to fire multiple rounds very quickly, that's troubling," Thurmond said.
According to the ATF, most of the devices come from overseas or are manufactured domestically, which makes them easy to track.
"It's very simple," Lightner admitted. "You can catch them on the streets. We've seen prices ranging from $15 to $30 online over the last few years, we've seen them rise in popularity here recently to around $150 online. You can probably get them on the street for about $1,000 more than that."
"There is no state law that bans Glock revolvers or submachine guns, although other states do," said Prim Escalona, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. "Alabama doesn't have that."

So far, Escalona's office has filed a lawsuit from Tuscaloosa. It's important to note that just converting a Glock violates federal law.
"He faces up to ten years in federal prison and can be fined up to $250,000," she explained. "Part of what we want to do is to keep these very dangerous, powerful and powerful weapons off the streets before they can be used in a homicide or other violent crime."
The law enforcement wants the public to know what these devices look like and what they can do. If you see a modified Glock or know someone who has one, you are urged to call the police.
"There's going to be parents who see this about guns, there's going to be people you know a friend or girlfriend who may see it and we want you to reach out to us," Thurmond said.
